{"id":824,"date":"2018-06-18T06:27:38","date_gmt":"2018-06-18T06:27:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elementor.frenify.net\/?p=824"},"modified":"2018-06-18T06:27:38","modified_gmt":"2018-06-18T06:27:38","slug":"theranos-founder-hit-with-criminal-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/frenify.com\/work\/envato\/frenify\/plugin\/elementor\/1\/theranos-founder-hit-with-criminal-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Theranos founder hit with criminal charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The founder of a US start-up that promised to revolutionise blood testing has been hit with criminal charges.<\/p>\n<p>US prosecutors said Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes engaged in a multi-million dollar scheme to defraud investors, doctors and patients.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-ndca\/pr\/theranos-founder-and-former-chief-operating-officer-charged-alleged-wire-fraud-schemes\">The charges<\/a>\u00a0come three months after Ms Holmes settled charges from financial regulators that she lied about the capabilities of her firm&#8217;s blood tests.<\/p>\n<p>Theranos earlier said Ms Holmes would step down as chief executive.<\/p>\n<p>Federal prosecutors said Ms Holmes encouraged doctors and patients to use the firm&#8217;s blood tests even though she knew the tests were not consistently accurate.<\/p>\n<p>Theranos&#8217;s former president Ramesh &#8220;Sunny&#8221; Balwani was also charged.<\/p>\n<p>Theranos, founded in 2003 when Ms Holmes was 19, had claimed its devices could test for conditions such as cancer and cholesterol with only a few drops of blood from a finger-prick, rather than taking full blood samples by needle from a vein.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This conspiracy misled doctors and patients about the reliability of medical tests that endangered health and lives,&#8221; said John F Bennett of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-43415967\">Bad blood: The rise and fall of Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They charged Ms Holmes, 34 and Mr Balwani, 53, with wire fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Theranos earlier on Friday said its general counsel David Taylor had been named chief executive.
